SINGAPORE: Debris containing asbestos that was found at several areas on Big Sister's Island and Pulau Ubin have been removed, said the National Parks Board (NParks) on Tuesday (Jun 5).
"NParks has completed the asbestos surveys on Coney Island, Sister's Island, and Pulau Ubin. No asbestos was found on Coney Island and Small Sister's Island," the agency said in a media release.
AdvertisementAsbestos-containing debris was found in May at four isolated areas in the lagoons on Big Sister's Island, prompting authorities to suspend monthly guided walks there.
Small pieces of debris containing asbestos found at four isolated locations on Pulau Ubin have also been removed.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which was commonly used as a construction material in the past. The use of asbestos in building materials has been banned in Singapore since 1989 due to its links to health risks such as lung cancer.

Asbestos was also found on parts of St John’s Island in April, prompting authorities to cordon off more than half of the island as a precautionary measure. Works to remove the asbestos will be completed by the end of the year, said the Singapore Land Authority (SLA).
