Chef Kin HK Wanton Noodle

Chef-Kin-HK-Wanton-Mee-9.jpg

The power of social media is not one to be trifled with. You?ve probably heard about the absurd queues by now, but is Chef Kin HK Wanton Noodle really worth the wait?

Tucked at the corner of a coffee shop in Yishun, former Crystal Jade executive chef Chan Wing Kin has taken his 18 years of culinary experience to venture into his own hawker business.

It?s easily become the talk of the town, with queues growing consistently days after word got out. Like many Singaporeans, I had to sus the hype out myself. Reluctantly, I made the decision to rock up before they open at 7.30am, so I could beat the queue.

I arrived five minutes before opening on a Monday morning and was pleasantly surprised to find about 15 groups waiting patiently in line. Well, if there?s one thing our country will definitely win in, it?s safe to say it?s queuing.

By the time I left, the queue had snaked so far back, the wait went up to an hour.

I must say, at its price point, Chef Kin HK Wanton Noodle serves up decent bowls of noodles, but definitely nothing ground-breaking for you to join a queue past half an hour. Of course, they are still in the early days since opening, and I?m sure over time, these bowls will only get better.

Bei-Ing Wanton Noodles

Wanton Mee With 36 Years of History At Katong? Roxy Square.

First timers may be in for a little shock because it does get loud and louder, especially when some customers are MIA and don?t arrive much later.

Bei-Ing Wanton Noodles has been since operations from 1984, while the second generation owners are the ones doing the cooking now.

Wait during peak hour weekends can be anything from 45 minutes and beyond. Don?t go away too far off because you won?t want uncle to shout your numbers repeatedly. Paiseh, can?

All-in-all, a good plate of Wanton Noodles which is value for its money. Perhaps if customers wait too long, they may come with higher expectations.

Fish Soup in Traditional Chaozhou-Style Claypots in Ang Mo Kio

Nothing quite hits the spot like a bubbling pot of Teochew fish soup on a rainy day. It just so happened to be raining on the day that I made a visit to a coffee shop in Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 which has recently seen long queues, thanks to the opening of Hong Kong Style Fried Rice and my target of the day, Chao Zhou 潮粥 Teochew Fish Soup.

The stall is run by a young hawker, Edwin Kang, who?s in his twenties. Edwin was trained by his friend Dee Chan, who was the former head chef of contemporary Cantonese restaurant Mott 32 in Marina Bay Sands.

All recipes are crafted by Edwin himself, using a wholesome broth base of old Nanyang chicken, Spanish pork ribs, and fish head and bones that have been simmered for at least 16 hours.

Be prepared to arrive earlier than the time you intend to chow down though, as it seems like the queues aren?t going anywhere anytime soon.

Slurp Up Robust Bowls of Curry Noodles in Ang Mo Kio!

There seems to be many new stalls popping up in the ?hood of Ang Mo Kio. One particular coffee shop is now home to a trio of fresh faces that are a month old or lesser, the oldest being Jian Zao Ipoh Curry Noodles.

After opening in September 2021, the stall has gained a steady following of fans who love a piping hot bowl of delicious curry noodles and I?m glad to say that I?m officially one as well.

The curry wasn?t too thick and the mix of coconut milk and spices made it very addictive. Afraid of spice? The curry leaves only a slight tingle on the tastebuds so you can enjoy this bowl without fear.

Between the two, I have to say I?m more in favour of the Signature Ipoh Curry Noodle with its ensemble of ingredients but I did enjoy the thickness of the dry version?s roux. Jian Zao Ipoh Curry Noodle definitely has one of the best curry chicken noodles in Singapore!

A faint sweet aroma from the broth instantly hit my nose as I walked towards to the stall, the uncle wasted no time in chopping up the offal to fill up my bowl with goodness.

To get to the food centre, you?ll have to climb up a flight of stairs from the bus stop. You can easily spot the Teochew Pig?s Organ Soup stall, which is nestled in the middle of the hawker centre.

The soup had a slightly darker shade of brown as compared to others that were clear, and it had a very light aftertaste. If you?re a fan of a stronger tasting broth, then you?d probably want to skip this stall.

The uncle was generous with the pig stomach and they were clean throughly, I enjoyed the collagen-filled pig?s skin, which had a very soft jelly-like texture that disintegrates quickly in the mouth.

Ah Boy Chicken Rice

23538739106_0aabf90ffd_k.jpg

Chicken rice is a simple dish. But it?s always the simpler dishes that demand the greater work and attention to detail.

I have been wanting to write a list of the best chicken rice in Singapore. But there are always tip offs about good chicken rice recommendations, hence it seems like a never ending conquest.

Ah Boy chicken rice stall has been a favourite for our local celebrity chef Eric Teo as he raved about this hidden gem in his Facebook about 2 years back. Our foodie group once paid a visit here on a Sunday but it was unfortunately closed.

Since then, I have always been wanting to come back again and try a plate of chicken rice. I have finally did it.

Ah Boy Chicken Rice has been one of the most talked about chicken rice in the western part of Singapore as Local celebrity chef Eric Teo has shared on his facebook page that this is one of the best chicken rice that he has ever tasted in Singapore.

Roasting chicken is an art by itself. Here, the roasted chicken has a crispy and thin skin that we love but the meat was slightly on the dry side. Poached chicken, however, fare much better. It was tender and cooked just right, maintaining a smooth texture.

With firm, sweet meat and jelly-like skin doused in a delicious mix of soy sauce, sesame oil, and chicken oil, it gave a slight lift in flavours and we can?t help but to order second and third helpings of rice! One important elements of fragrant oily rice which was topped with tender chicken. I thought the rice itself is fluffy and loose with a nice aroma and not too greasy.

However, I found the tangy chilli dip to be a little watery. We also ordered a sweet and sour tofu which is a good accompaniment to the chicken rice.

He said their chicken is very tender and he particularly liked their chili as it is full of flavor with fresh pureed ginger added.

The exact location is in V6 Food Court at Choa Chua Kang Crescent, just a stone's throw from Yew Tew MRT station.

Mr Chai, the owner, came from Malaysia and prior to opening this stall, he has worked in different hotels.

Overall, his chicken rice was quite decent but not good enough to be amongst the best chicken rice in my list. I would not mind eating again if i happen to be in the vicinity.

Ah Ho Teochew Noodles Bak Chor Mee Pok Singapore 亚河潮州粿条面

P1010220jk.JPG

I was excited by Wai Kuan's Facebook post declaring that Ah Ho is her favourite mee pok tah. Her photo of the noodles looked so irresistibly delicious :-D So I couldn't wait to check it out when I was in Singapore. Ah Ho Teochew noodle stall is at Kim San Leng kopitiam, Verdun Road - a lively part of Singapore I like visiting. Thank you Wai Kuan for the share :-D

Ah Ho's mee pok tah has everything, plus some.

The usual suspects - lean pork slices, fish cake slices, braised mushroom, fish ball, minced pork in the soup, a huge mound of noodles, and then there were fish dumplings (her giao) and fried tik poh (dried sole fish 扁鱼乾). A slice of pork liver would have made it perfect for me (there was none) ;-D

There was no chance for me to get to know the stall holders better as they were so busy. I lingered a while but the queue only grew longer as lunch time approached. I shall come back another time for that.

Relive the Good Old Days Through Home-Cooked Local Dishes

Fu Xiang Signatures best known for its Award Winning Curry Chicken, started out in the 1990s, from a small stall in a Coffee Shop, and has since expanded islandwide.

Before popping by Fu Xiang Signatures for lunch, I was expecting the owner to be an experienced middle-aged man.

To my surprise, I was greeted by Edric and Edwin, a pair of twin brothers in their early thirties. When asked about the story behind Fu Xiang Signatures, Edric said, ?It started from our parents and we wanted to continue the heritage.?

The two brothers have been helping out at their parents? stall since they were kids. After finishing their studies, they went into other trades, but ultimately returned to F&B to carry on their parents? legacy, and build the brand.

?It?s our parents? hard work and we want to grow it and not let it go to waste,? the brothers shared.

Fu Xiang Signatures believes that everyone should have a taste of heritage, and relive the good old days through home-cooked local dishes that are made from scratch.

If you are in the vicinity and craving for a good bowl of chicken curry, Fu Xiang Signatures is the place for you.

Kun Ji Duck Rice

kun-ji-duck-rice-10.jpg

Duck rice and duck porridge have always been my go-to for comfort food since it?s both affordable and scrumptious.

If you stay somewhere in the East, I am sure you will have heard about Kun Ji Duck Rice at Marine Parade Central Market & Food Centre. There are long queues during peak hours every day!

In hopes of adding another gem to my duck rice/porridge list, I traveled all the way from the West to the East to get a taste of Kun Ji Duck Rice.

Kun Ji gave a pretty generous portion of rice, and the dish also had plenty of duck meat drizzled with braised sauce all over. There was a good mixture of thicker and thinner slices of duck meat, all with skin, and each piece was tender and flavourful with a good amount of fat.

Overall, I found this to be an affordable and satisfying plate of duck rice. If I?m ever back in the Marine Parade area, I?d like to go back for a second plate.

My trip to the East was not in vain, and I liked that the dishes were generous in portion, tasty yet affordable. I would definitely add Kun Ji Duck Rice to my list of go-to duck rice/porridge places.

Craving some comfort food that doesn?t cost much? Head down to Kun Ji Duck Rice if you?re in the East!

Wonton Mama

24-Hour Coffeeshop Stall Serves Thai Wanton Noodle.

Before I moved to SengKang five years ago, I always have this perception that there is not much to eat in this new town. But now, Sengkang is getting more exciting as more people move here. This also means there are more food options in the area!

Wonton Mama is the latest addition to SengKang. I first tried their food when I ordered online during Phase 2 (Heightened Alert). Impressed by the quality, I paid them a visit immediately after dine-in is allowed.

To be honest, this wanton mee is much better than those from some of the popular stalls I have been to. I would definitely come back again. Good news for night owls! They operate 24 hours on some days.

One of the best Hokkien Mee in Singapore

The noodles soaking the rich prawn stock, the whiff of wok hei in the air, the spicy sambal belachan at the side? That?s what you?ll find at Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle (小弟炒虾面).

I?ve known Terence since the day he started his Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle stall in Serangoon North 6 years ago.

Being a hawker is not exactly the easiest job but this 28-year-old young hawker aspires to cook the best Hokkien Mee in Singapore.

He has carved his name as an up-and-coming hawker star who has been featured in many media and also participated in Singapore Day in Melbourne.

Xiao Di means ?young brother? in Chinese, but Terence has more than 10 years of cooking experience.

He was working at his friend?s stall frying Hokkien mee, carrot cake and oyster omelette before he decides to perfect his perfect his skills at various well-known fried prawn noodles stalls.

Coupled with trial and error recipes and cooking techniques picked up on the internet, he finally gained the confidence to start out on his own.

Terence strongly believes that cooking with passion will make a difference to the final dish. Therefore, he is very particular about the preparation time and choosing the right ingredients. His stock is prepared using prawns from Thailand, which have more roe for extra flavour.

One mouthful and you?ll close your eyes in a moment of divine enjoyment.

We have tried many popular stalls that serve hokkien mee in Singapore and I personally prefer Xiao Di Fried Hokkien Mee.

Wet and gooey, Xiao Di?s fried prawn noodle is stir-fried in rich stock gravy, topped with slices of cuttlefish, fresh prawns, crispy pork lard and slices of roast pork. All these beautiful flavours are bound together with a thick and robust prawn stock well absorbed by the noodles.

You?ll be hit by a strong taste of ?wok hei?, which we particularly liked.

The garlic and pork lard further accentuated the overall fragrance of the Hokkien Mee making it simply irresistible.

Squeeze a bit of lime and pair the noodles with Xiao Di?s specially made chilli sauce, you will be able to fully enjoy this delish plate of fried Hokkien mee.

Ah Er Soup – Cantonese Soup Receives Michelin Bib Gourmand

ah-er-soups-1300x928.jpg

Opened for almost 6 years, Ah Er Soup specialises in traditional Chinese herbal soups at ABC Brickworks Market and Food Centre. If you haven’t heard, this stall has just received the Michelin Bib Gourmand Rating 2017. You can look forward to slurping down luxurious Buddha Jumps Over The Wall, or more commonly found homemade soups such as Old Cucumber Pork Ribs Soup and ABC Pork Ribs Soup.

The soups here are affordably priced – nothing above $7. When asked if the pricing will increase after receiving the Bib Gourmand Rating, Mdm Qu smiled affectionately and said, “this stall caters to many elderly, so we will still maintain our current pricing to meet their needs”.

HOLLYWOOD ZHENGUANG WANTAN NOODLES 好莱坞正光雲吞麵

43246117854_7186d0d4d9_b.jpg

HAIG ROAD MARKET & FOOD CENTRE

The old Hollywood Theater would be no stranger to those living in the east. Built in 1958, it has seen some of the biggest movie stars from Hong Kong like Siew Fung Fung, Fong Bo Bo, Chan Bo-chu, Nancy Sit, etc performing live on stage.

Just behind the theater is a canteen called Hin Hollywood Canteen where Zhenguang Wantan (sic) Noodles has been doing business for fifty years.

The area was demolished in 2011 to make way for redevelopment and standing in its place now is the new One KM Mall.

What happened to Zhenguang Wantan Noodles stall then? It shifted across the road into Haig Road Market & Food Centre.

There is a very heartwarming story behind this stall. Decades ago, their neighbor passes away leaving behind several young children.

Mr Lim, the owner of Zhenguang Wantan Noodle then took it upon himself to take care of them. Not only did he provide for them, he also make sure that they do not go astray.

Despite having three children of his own and probably not making much from the noodle stall, he loved them as they were his own.

Now all grown up, the children had their own lives and careers; one of them even helps out at the stall.

Now, isn't that a very selfless and noble act?

JOFA MEE POK

jofa-mee-pok-2.jpg

Ah, bak chor mee. Call me basic, but it?s been my number one go-to comfort meal since primary school, and probably will remain incumbent in my books way into adulthood.

Nothing sounds better than a steaming bowl of springy mee pok drenched in an aromatic combination of chilli and vinegar (oh, and more of both please), which is why every time there?s a new bak chor mee stall in town, I?m already making plans to visit.

The next on my list is JOFA Mee Pok, a newly opened store in Tampines.

JOFA Mee Pok is run by two young entrepreneurs, Joel Tan and Fabian Lim. The former of the duo graduated with a degree from the Culinary Institute of America, and brings with him experience from his apprenticeship at two Michelin-starred Restaurant Z?n.

JOFA Mee Pok also makes it a point to serve quality soup to their patrons, an upgrade from the usual salty, plain broth that most stalls offer as a side to their bak chor mee.

The soup is a rich broth made with pork bones, chicken, red dates, and fried garlic, and is made extra flavourful and tasty because the duo cooks seafood in it. It might be hawker food, but I think I?m pretty convinced that it?ll be worth making the trip down to Tampines

Brickworks Food Centre ? Power Chendol Very Powerful!

I first got to know the guys from Jin Jin Hot/Cold Desserts during Ultimate Hawker Fest 2014 when they had a stall selling their signature gangster ice and power chendol. It?s consistently long queue at their stall during the festival and they were sold out even before the event ended.

To many old residents living near ABC Food Centre and Market, Jin Jin Hot/Cold Desserts has a very nostalgic value.

The original owner gave up the shop but Calvin and Ewan kept the brand and revived the business. Both of them were totally not F&B trained to begin with. One of them was in insurance, while the other used to be a DJ.

They wanted to set up a beer garden initially but didn?t work out.

Roast Meats to Sink your Teeth Into!

Roasted meat stalls are a dime a dozen in hawker centres. However, searching for a truly outstanding one is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Imagine my joy when I discovered Choon Kee Roasted Delights in Golden Mile Food Center, which serves impeccable roasted meat dishes!
Originating from Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2, Choon Kee Roasted Delights serves up all the roast meat classics.

This includes Roasted Pork, Char Siu, and Roasted Duck meat. Of course, I had to try everything.

What stood out to me most was the duck skin, which was actually crispy! Many roast meat stalls struggle to attain crispy duck skin, but Choon Kee has really mastered the art of roasting their duck.

If you are like me and can’t resist great roast meats, then Choon Kee Roasted Delights at Golden Mile Food Center should definitely be on your list of places to visit. You won’t regret it!

Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice

Sembawang-Traditional-Claypot-Rice-0628.jpg

Authentic Charred Claypot Rice + KL-Style San Lao Bee Hoon At Sembawang

Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice is well-known for its authenticity ? every pot of claypot rice is cooked fresh upon order. It?s sooo fresh that the stall even cooks the rice from scratch inside each claypot!

Located at Sembawang, this cosy little zi char eatery also sells a selection of other standard zi char items.

The minute I stepped into the stall, I could smell the charred smokiness from the claypots at neighbouring tables, which made my dining companion and I incredibly excited to try it for ourselves.

Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice has limited seating and already had a snaking queue outside when we reached. It only has a couple dozen tables or so, so it?s best to call to make a reservation.

Plus, it isn?t air-conditioned and only has rotating fans, so it can get quite stuffy, especially on a hot afternoon.

If not for the fact that this zi char place is located in Sembawang, I?d gladly bring my entire family (and extended family, at that) for a bowl of gloriously charred claypot rice again.

To me, the curry fish head is a must-order. The curry was fragrant and aromatic and I?d love to drench my rice or bee hoon in it.

The prices here at Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice are also relatively reasonable and the portions are huge, so I?ll definitely be back!

Zai Shun Curry Fish

Foodies in the West of Singapore already know where to get good Steamed Fish and Teochew Porridge, with Zai Shun Curry Fish Head popular and extremely busy during their lunch time hours.

Zai Shun Curry Fish Head is located within a coffeeshop at 253 Jurong East Street 24, right next to another food haunt of Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre.

It does not just sell Curry Fish Head, and is ironically better known for its Steamed Fish, Zi Char fare, and Teochew Porridge.

When I visited during the late morning, perhaps only a table or two were having a Curry Fish Head, but 90% of the entire coffeeshop had a plate of Steamed Fish on the table.

Very shiok!!!

Lau Phua Chay 老半齋燒臘 Authentic Roasted Delicacies

Lau-Phua-Chay-750x500.jpg

I’ve visited Lau Phuat Chay before to try their Char Siew Rice.

I was not dissatisfied then and I was not dissatisfied when I went back there to try their Duck Rice ($3.50) which makes use of the same mystifying, dark and beautiful sauce.

The duck meat was tender and paired with the sauce plus the chili sauce, the essence of the duck will shine through in a beautiful explosion of flavours.

Shocking would be an understatement to describe my first impression of Lau Phua Chay Roasted Delicacies (老半齋燒臘) at Alexandra Village Food Centre.

I was actually queuing for the Avocado juice next door during my previous visit to the food centre when I saw the darkest char siew I had ever seen hanging behind the glass window.

That certainly got my attention and I made a mental note to try this out during my next visit here.

Try this place out when you are in the area and let me know what you think.

Go early to avoid the long queue! This place is a hidden gem.Don't said never jio you. Do give them a try. Look damn good & damn delicious, salivia also drooling, gonna try...

Don't miss it. We would like to invite all customers to give this place a try.
