Misc/Others Crime in 2022: Stalking and revenge porn on the rise in Japan

Japan is famous for its low crime, but it depends on what kind of crime and how you measure things. And it doesn’t mean that crime is not on the rise in certain areas.

According to recent media reports, child abuse cases continue to climb, with police recording 2,181 in 2022 (up from 2,174 the previous year) — a new record.

Stalking cases are also at a record high, the National Police Agency said on March 2, as were domestic violence consultations, though there was a slight fall in the number of DV cases in which the police took action or made an arrest. (It should be noted that the current law does not cover psychological abuse.)

We were most interested in the rise in revenge porn.

Police dealt with 1,728 cases in 2022, a number 2.6 times higher than 2018’s. We love amateur porn and nude pics, but this trend does make us wonder if all these videos and photos we consume were actually shared with the consents of both parties or if they were leaked — and if that leak was done as a form of retaliation.

As you might expect, most revenge porn cases involved romantic partners (or, more likely, ex-partners), though we were surprised to see that 20% of the cases featured acquaintances that the victims only knew online. This is a relatively high minority. We expect it means that people are tricked into sharing their personal pictures and videos with someone, who then leaks them. But how is that then “revenge” if they didn’t know the other person properly in the first place? Did they attempt to extort the victim for money? We’d like some more details here.

The stalking law has only been in force since the year 2000. Violations were up several percent to 1,028 cases, which includes restraining order violations.
